17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Good morning and welcome to your daily walk. I'm Dan Stevens. There are some interesting examples of spiritual eyes being opened in Scripture. The road to Emmaus was talked about this past Sunday, in which two of Jesus' disciples have an encounter with the resurrected, yet unrecognized Jesus, who explains the scriptures regarding his suffering, and then they suddenly recognize him during a meal. Immediately afterward, Jesus vanishes from their presence. The story demonstrates hope and grief, that Jesus walks with believers during times of grief and despair, even when they do not recognize his presence. And interestingly, it shows the importance of understanding the scriptures. It says in verse 27 of this story that, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself. Surely the two disciples, perhaps several times in the synagogue, had heard the same scriptures that Jesus referred to. And yet the full understanding of these scriptures eluded them. A great example of spiritual eyes being opened in the Old Testament comes from 2 Kings 6, when Elisha prayed to God to open the eyes of his servant to see what was happening in the spiritual realm immediately around them. When the servant's eyes were opened, he saw the mountain filled with a heavenly host of horses and chariots of fire, protecting them from the Syrian army that surrounded the city. The story really brings home the point of God's protection, but it also shows the big difference between physical sight and spiritual vision. God's presence and power might often be invisible to the natural eye, but fear can be overcome by having a spiritual perspective. So there you have it. Two examples of spiritual eyes being opened in Scripture. Finally, the Apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5 7 that we live by faith, not by sight. May that be true for all of us. Have a great day.
